We asked our ambassadors to share their perspectives on the Black Lives Matter movement currently taking place in the USA and internationally.
Below is a statement from Jaime Musso, CRC ambassador from Italy and Germany:
The brutal murder of George Floyd by the hands of a police officer in Minneapolis triggered a worldwide wave of protests, under the slogan of 'Black lives matter'. The goal of the BLM movement, born in 2013, is to eradicate violence and systemic racism towards black people. To solve the issue of police brutality there is a need for a structural change that will redefine the role and power held by law enforcement bodies, who are supposed to protect citizens and not harm them. The problems of systemic racism and power abuse is deep-rooted in most western societies, which is why the protests have received such widespread support from every corner of the world. For me, this was an opportunity to read and learn about Italy’s racist colonial past, which is something that is barely taught in schools. I strongly believe in the cause of the BLM movement and hope that each one of us will actively engage to end injustice and racism.
