Last week we lost a dear friend to humanity in Rosalynn Carter who passed away at her home in Georgia at the age of 96. The late former first lady was best known for her work in advocacy in Women’s rights and mental health. Rosalynn and her husband, President Jimmy Carter, worked side by side both during his presidency and afterwards to try and make the world a better place.
To get personal for a moment, when I was 12, I attended an event in San Diego hosted by the Carter Center who revolved the weekend around the Camp David accords in 1979 which brought peace between Israel and Egypt, which my Father played a part in bringing about. Former President Carter screened my father’s film about the Camp’s accords (Back Door Channels: The Price of Peace) at the event. I remember Rosalynn coming to watch the film. I deeply regret the fact that I wasn’t older and more invested in speaking with her because she had a lot to offer in terms of knowledge and wisdom, on top of all of that she just seemed like a very nice lady.
The ideals of peace that were the foundation of the Camp David Accords continued into the creation of the Charney Resolution Center. The Carter Center’s mission has always been to alleviate human suffering of any kind, whether it be related to health or war, although its focus has currently shifted to preserving democracy in the United States. Both the Carter and Charney Resolution Centers are working to uphold the legacy of the Camp David Accords by applying the triangular relationship established between Israel, Egypt, and The Carter Center, to the conflict with Palestine. We send our deepest condolences to President Carter and his family and we hope for better days ahead.
